Connecting and Transferring Files with FileZilla

FileZilla makes it really easy to connect to any FTP site and start transferring files. Everything you need is simply a mouse click away. To connect and transfer files, you'll need to understand how to use two components of the FileZilla window:

• The Quickconnect toolbar
• The File Manager

The Quickconnect Toolbar

FileZilla provides you with one of the most versatile and easy to use navigation controls of any FTP client: the Quickconnect toolbar. Think of it like the address bar in your web browser.

To use the Quickconnect toolbar, just fill in the boxes from left to right:

• Host: Enter the address for your FTP server.
• Username: Enter the username for your FTP server.
• Password: Enter the password for your FTP server.
• Port: This is optional, but use 22 for SFTP and 21 for standard FTP.
• Click on the QuickConnect button.

When you see the list of files appear on the right, you're connected. Here's how the Quickconnect bar might look when you connect to your ExaVault account:

• Host: bobsmith.exavault.com
• Username: bobsmith
• Password: (..sorry, but Bob doesn't hand this out to just anyone!)
• Port: 22

ExaVault recommends that you use SFTP to connect to your account.

The File Manager and Transferring Files

The File Manager takes up the bulk of the window in FileZilla. It is divided into two sections: the local site and the remote site.

The Local Site

• The local site comprises the left side of the window.
• The local site is your computer.
• You'll see a drop-down box with the current directory at the top.

The Remote Site

• The remote site is on the right side of the window.
• The remote site is your FTP server.
• Like the local site, you'll see a drop-down box that lists the current directory on the FTP server.

Transferring Files

To transfer files and/or folders:

1. Select the files and/or folders to transfer.

2. Drag the selected files and/or folders from one side of the screen to the other.

To download files, you need only to drag the selected files from the right-hand side of the window to the left-hand side.

To upload files, drag the selected files from the left-hand side of the window to the right-hand side.
