Common Questions About the Free Appliance

Quick answers on what's actually free, what you'll need to run it, how long deployment takes, and how to get help if you get stuck.

The full ExaVault on-premise appliance is free to download and run for deployments up to 50 users. No license cost under that cap, no expiring trial, no time limit. You run it on your own infrastructure (VMware, AWS, GCP, or Azure) — those bring their own hosting costs, but the software itself is free under 50 users. Above 50 users a Paid license ($99/month per 50-user pack) is required.

Two reasons. One: it lets us send you the right deployment docs for your platform. Two: it tells our sales team you're evaluating the appliance — if your deployment looks like a fit for paid support or Enterprise, expect a follow-up. After you submit the form you go straight to the download instructions; no waiting for an email.

About 30 minutes for the VM provisioning + initial configuration. You boot the image, set the hostname + admin password through the Appliance Manager, configure DNS to point at the appliance, and you have a working SFTP / FTP / FTPS / WebDAV server. The Appliance Manager walks you through SSL setup, user creation, and audit-log configuration after that.

64-bit Intel CPU, 4 cores, 12 GB RAM, 100 GB primary disk for the OS, plus a sized data drive for the files your users will store. ARM (including AWS Graviton) is not supported. Supported hypervisors: VMware ESXi 5.x–8.x natively; AWS, GCP, and Azure via the Marketplace listings; Hyper-V via image conversion from the VMware OVA.

Yes — up to 50 users. The Free tier is full-featured for production deployments inside that user cap. Above 50 users a Paid license is required ($99/month per 50-user pack). The Paid tier also adds operational features at any user count — automatic updates, SSO, 2FA, automatic SSL, syslog→SIEM — and direct support, useful if you're running the appliance as critical infrastructure.

The published documentation at docs.exavault.com covers installation, upgrade, and operations end-to-end. If you hit something the docs don’t cover, the Paid support tier adds email and phone support; Enterprise adds 24/7 plus deployment assistance.
