Connecting and Transferring Files with Core FTP

Now that Core FTP is installed – how exactly do you use it? Core FTP has made it a cinch to connect to your FTP server. To get started, you need only to master two things:

  • The Quick Connect Window
  • The File Manager

The Quick Connect Window

Using the Quick Connect window to connect to your FTP server in Core FTP.

The Quick Connect window is accessed from the toolbar. Click on the button that looks like a lightning bolt.

In the Quick Connect window, you'll need some information to connect to your FTP server:

  • a description such as “ExaVault File Storage”
  • Your FTP server name.
  • Your user name.
  • Your password.
  • Use port 22 and check ☑ the SSH/SFTP box to use Secure FTP.

Here is what the connection to your ExaVault account might look like:

  • Description: ExaVault File Storage
  • Hostname: bobsmith.exavault.com
  • Username: bobsmith
  • Password: * (be careful about handing these out!)
  • Port: 22
  • ☑ SSH/SFTP

When you are all done, click the Connect button and you are good to go.

Disconnecting

Disconnecting from your FTP server in Core FTP.

You disconnect from your FTP server by clicking on the Disconnect button. This can be found on the right-hand side of the File Manager window. Look for a button that has two red arrows.

The File Manager

Using the File Manager lists in Core FTP.

The File Manager is what transfers files. Like most FTP clients, the layout of the File Manager window in Core FTP has two sections:

Local List

The Local List is on the left hand side of the screen.

  • This is a view of the files on your computer.
  • The current directory is shown in the drop-down box immediately above the list of files.
Remote List

The Remote List is on the right hand side of the screen.

  • This is a view of the files on your FTP server.
  • The current directory is shown in the drop-down box immediately above the list of files.

Folder Navigation

Using the Filetrees in Core FTP.

You can navigate folders in both the Local and Remote Lists a few different ways:

  • You can use the Directory Tree window to navigate folders.
  • You can enter a path directly into the Current Directory drop-down box.
  • You can use either the Up Directory button or the . . folder to navigate to the parent folder.
  • You can double-click on folders to open them.

File Manager Toolbars

Using the toolbars in Core FTP.

Above both the Local List and the Remote list, you will see a toolbar. This toolbar offers you a number of options. If you mouse over each of the buttons, you'll see a pop-up that gives you an explanation of what each button does. Here are some of the more useful features:

  • Search allows you to find files either on your computer (Local list) or the server (Remote List).
  • File Mask lets you to set a file extension filter. For example, *.zip will show only zip files.
  • Reconnect will reconnect you to the FTP server you were most recently connected to.

To create a shortcut:

1. Connect to your FTP server

2. Right-click on the remote side's file manager and select Misc > Create Shortcut.
