Clear the Java Cache

Clear the Java Cache

Sometimes strange things happen with Java applets. As a result, you might need to clear out the cache of Java files that are stored on your local machine. You can think of these like a history of web pages – except instead of images and html pages, Java files are stored.

Mac

To clear the Java cache in Mac OS X:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Click: Applications > Utilities: Open Java Preferences.
  3. If you have Mac OS 10.5 and above:
    1. On the Network Page, click the Delete Files button.
  4. If you have Mac OS 10.4 and below:
    1. On the General Page, click the Delete Files button.
  5. In the Delete Files page, make sure all options are checked and click OK.
  6. Close out of the Java Preferences window, and restart (% + Q) your browser.

Windows and Linux

NOTE: With Windows, the first thing that you'll want to do is to make sure that you have the latest and greatest Java runtime installed.

To clear the Java cache in Windows:

  1. Open the Control Panel and select Java
  2. In the Java Control Panel, click General tab > Settings button for Temporary Internet Files.
  3. In the Temporary Files dialog box, click the Delete Files button.
  4. Make sure all items are checked and click OK.
  5. Close out of the Java Control Panel and restart your browser.

Clearing the Java cache in Linux is very similar to the process in Windows. Simple replace step 1 by executing the following command at a terminal:

  ControlPanel

If Oracle Java is installed, this will open the Java control panel. After that, the steps to clear the Java cache are the same as they are in Windows.
