Advanced Usage and Settings

EVFTP lets you do a lot more than just transfer files. With EVFTP, you can:

  • Rename files, include files with pesky filenames, such as:
    • Filenames with extra s p a c e s …
    • Non-English ¢ႬăяӓçŧệჁຮ.
  • Show Hidden_files on Your Computer and on Your FTP server.
  • Resume interrupted FTP transfers.

Renaming Files

Renaming files and folders with EVFTP is easy:

  1. Select the file or folder you want to rename.
  2. Click the Rename button on the toolbar.
  3. Enter the new name for your file or folder.
  4. Press the Enter key on your keyboard when you are done.

You can rename files on Your Computer as well as Your FTP site.

S p a c e y Filenames

Renaming files with EVFTP

One of EVFTP's great features is that it doesn't remove extra s p a c e s from file names when it shows the filenames in the file lists. If you use another FTP client and receive an error like

Cannot delete file/folder ….
Folder does not exist

… but you can plainly see that the file or folder plainly exists, you probably have an errant space (or five) in the file or folder name.

To see extra spaces, just rename a file as described previously. You'll see the extra spaces.

Hidden Files

Managing hidden files with EVFTP

In the FTP world, if you preface a file or folder name with a period ( . ), you have designated a hidden file. FTP inhereited this trait from the Unix world, so that is how you hide files in Linux and Mac OS X.

To show hidden files on either Your Computer or Your FTP Server:

  1. Click the Settings button.
  2. Check the appropriate box to show hidden files on either Your Computer or Your FTP server.
  3. Click OK.

When it comes to showing hidden files on Your Computer, EVFTP doesn't leave MS Windows users out in the lurch. EVFTP is smart enough to read MS Windows file attributes too!

Resume Transfer

Using resume transfer with EVFTP

Have you ever wanted to pause a file transfer? For example:

You're at the coffee shop and trying to upload a file on their wireless. It's slower than molasses and you want to stop and upload it when you get back to the office.

It's just this sort of situation that Resume Transfer is made for! What's more, EVFTP is defaulted to use Resume Transfer.

Note: Resume Transfer works for both uploads and downloads.

To use Resume Transfer:

  1. While uploading, click the Cancel button to stop transferring (you can just close your browser too).
  2. When you are ready to resume uploading, connect to your FTP site again.
  3. Select the file in Your Computer that you want to resume uploading.
  4. Click the arrow button to transfer ( for download; to upload).
  5. When prompted, click the Resume button.

Your file will pick up the transfer right where it left off!
